Winter Movie Guide

Heath Ledger in 'The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus'If you haven’t heard by now, James Cameron has a movie coming out. It’s called Avatar, something you may have missed by its subtle marketing campaign. Yes. That’s sarcasm.
I thought I’d remind myself that other movies exist by whipping up this handy, dandy guide to what the remaining chilly months have in store for us. While past years have often been a cold wasteland for genre flicks, this year has been surprisingly kind…and some of the best is yet to come…

23rd – Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel
The little Misfits in your life may very well drag you to this. Just giving you a heads up…
25th – The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
Much will be made of Heath Ledger’s last film, which looks spectacular. Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, and Jude Law stepped in for free to ensure the movie could finish.

25th – Sherlock Holmes
Some people are pissed that the great classic detective has gotten a grimy, actiony makeover. Personally, I don’t care so long as it’s a good movie. Plus Jude Law’s pornstache is commendable.

8th – Bitch Slap
It’s a 50’s-70’s style “Bad Girl” Exploitation flick made with more modern day sensibilities…so they say. It doesn’t look as awesome as Black Dynamite but could be enjoy. Bonus points for some of the costars.

8th – Daybreakers
Hell yes.

15th – The Book of Eli

15th – Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil
Teen Red Riding Hood, training in a distant land with the covert Sister Hoods, joins the Wolf to the disappearance of Hansel and Grendel.
15th – The Spy Next Door
Jackie Chan stars as an undercover spy made to babysit the bratty kids next door. Your children may or may not drag you to this one…but at least you get Chan-tastic action scenes.
22nd – Legion

22nd – Tooth Fairy
It actually looks pretty funny but I’m getting tired of “Family Friendly” Dwayne Johnson…

29th – When in Rome
It’s not scifi but there’s a fantasy element (shut up, I know it’s a bit of a stretch) plus it’s got Kristen Bell, Josh Duhamel, and Will Arnett among others. Really, I’m including it because the trailer had me cracking up.

5th – District 13: Ultimatum
If you haven’t seen parkour-fest District 13, you have to. Because it rocks incredibly hard. Then see this. Because yes.

12th – Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief
I’m loving this trailer. If it lives up to its potential, Percy will fill the vacuum left by the Harry Potter series quite nicely.
12th – The Wolfman
This is how you remake a movie dammit.

19th – Shutter Island
I’m usually very suspicious about psychological thriller/mysteries because I can usually tell what happens by the trailers. This, however, looks damn good.
Bonus Month! – March
5th – Alice in Wonderland
Ooooo boy, creepy. But in that fun Tim Burton way.

19th – Hot Tub Time Machine
Please let this be as funny as it could be…
{youtubejw}bivf5IRZ_gk {/youtubejw}
19th – Season of the Witch
One of 892 movies Nicolas Cage will be in in 2010.
26th – Clash of the Titans
Three words: Release the Kraken.
26th – How to Train Your Dragon
It took them a second to get it together but Dreamworks is really bringing it with their animated movies now.

There are surprisingly a lot of awesome movies coming out before the summer. Which are you most excited about? Think they’ll live up to their potential?
