‘Mortal Kombat Rebirth’ Trailer: Reboot Film or Video Game?

Watch this trailer. I dare you not to be excited.

When you watch something this fantastic, this epic, this drool-inducing, it’s almost an exercise in cruelty when to think it’s not for a big movie but instead for a video game. Does it make me want to play the game? Hell yes. But I’d also mourn for the film that isn’t.
All my research has come up with…well, not much. There’s definitely a new MK game in the pipeline (so far only identified as Mortal Kombat 9 with a general release date of around Christmas 2010) but not much is known about it. It makes perfect sense that this is WB Games Chicago’s brilliant way to generate buzz for the franchise heading into E3 next week. By the way, couldn’t they have found a better name for the Company Formerly Known as Midway? WB Games Chicago is awfully clunky…
So the question I have now is….why not? Why isn’t this for a film? There’s been little movement on the alleged reboot of the film franchise, one that’s been in development hell for at least a decade partially thanks to Threshold Entertainment’s progress-blocking lawsuit against Warner Bros. With San Diego Comic Con fast approaching, this is an equally brilliant move if this is a legit film trailer. Michael Jai White as Jax (who also played Spawn) and Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade would be enough to get me interested but everyone else plays their parts magnificently. The gritty, more realistic tone and the re-imagining of the characters are clever and work wonderfully.
While I don’t have any definitive answers for you, the one thing I know for sure is if all video game (or any other adaptive property) movies were this well-done, us nerds wouldn’t have many legitimate complaints to make about them.
P.S. Is it some law that Johnny Cage must be offed in the movies?
UPDATE (8:36pm)- Thanks to the glorious Jeri Ryan and Twitter, we now know the answer. Per @JeriLRyan:

It’s not a game trailer. Actually was made for the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film.
More MK FAQs: I did it as a favor to a friend. No idea yet what WB’s reaction to it was. And I’m not sure how you can contact WB…
…(cont.) to push them to make it. But you guys are resourceful…! 😉

So this is officially one of the greatest movie pushes I’ve EVER seen. Clap that up and point me to whatever petition or Facebook group I have to join to make this happen… (Thanks to @IrrationaliTV for pointing out Jeri’s update!)
