Rejoice! TNT's 'The Librarians' Is Officially Official!

The planned spinoff from the trio of TV movies starring Noah Wylie as smarty-pants adventurer Flynn Carsen is greenlit and that makes me a happy camper.
From the press release:

TNT is returning to the world of its hit movie franchise The Librarian with a brand new series from Electric Entertainment and executive producers Dean Devlin, John Rogers and Marc Roskin. Rebecca Romijn (X-Men, TNT’s King & Maxwell) is set to lead the cast of the new series, which is entitled The Librarians. Noah Wyle (Falling Skies, ER) will executive-produce and play a recurring role in the series, reprising his role as Flynn Carsen from TNT’s movie trilogy. Christian Kane (TNT’s Leverage, Angel), Lindy Booth (Dawn of the Dead, The Philanthropist) and John Kim (Neighbors, The Pacific) are set to round out the cast as the newest protectors of the world’s mystical treasures, with Emmy® winner John Larroquette (Night Court, Deception) slated to play their reluctant caretaker. Also appearing from the movie trilogy will be Emmy winners Bob Newhart (The Big Bang Theory, The Bob Newhart Show) and Jane Curtin (Kate & Allie, 3rd Rock from the Sun). And Matt Frewer (Max Headroom, TNT’s Falling Skies) is set to play a recurring role. TNT has ordered 10 episodes of The Librarians, with plans to launch the series in late 2014.

THE LIBRARIANS will pick up 10 years after Carsen began his tenure as the Librarian and the gig has morphed into a more-than-one-man job. To aid him, the Library brings in four new recruits: “…Eve Baird (Romijn), a highly skilled counter-terrorism agent who is responsible for protecting the group and keeping them all alive; Jake Stone (Kane), an Oklahoma oil worker with an IQ of 190 and an encyclopedic knowledge of art history; Cassandra (Booth), a quirky young woman with the special gift of auditory and sensory hallucinations linked to memory retrieval, known as synesthesia; and Ezekiel Jones (Kim), a master of new technologies and aficionado of old classic crimes who enjoys playing the role of international man of mystery.”
Now that KING & MAXWELL has been discontinued, I appreciate that Romijn has swiftly found another show to beat people up on. The more butt-kicking women on TV and in movies, the better. Kane is a long time favorite, obviously, and I liked his chemistry with Romijn during his guest spot as Michelle Maxwell’s equally butt-kicking brother. It’s hard to tell from the brief description but it seems Kane won’t be participating in nearly as many fight scenes as he had as Eliot Spencer. However, his character’s name is Jake Stone so there should be at least a few. I mean, c’mon. Jake Stone.

Now Lindy Booth, who recently guest-starred in the SUPERNATURAL episode “Rock and a Hard Place”, is an interesting case because I’ve always liked her when I saw her but never really looked at her IMDB page. Turns out my subconscious fuzzy feelings go all the way back to Lindy’s first gig, EERIE, INDIANA. BECAUSE EERIE, INDIANA. She was also in RELIC HUNTER, THE FAMOUS JETT JACKSON, an ep of BIG WOLF ON CAMPUS, and THE 4400 among others. So she’s pretty much the best. I find it interesting that her name is Cassandra and her specific form of synesthesia is described as “auditory and sensory hallucinations linked to memory retrieval.” Could they possibly link her to the Cassandra of Greek mythology who could see the future but was cursed so that no one would believe her?
Kim is the wildcard of the cast, at least to the vast majority of US viewers, as his major credit is on the Australian soap mainstay NEIGHBOURS. It’s not a bad origin as some great actors have come from the same soap including Guy Pearce (MEMENTO, IRON MAN 3), Jesse Spencer (HOUSE, CHICAGO FIRE), Radha Mitchell (PITCH BLACK, RED WIDOW), Dichen Lachman (DOLLHOUSE, BEING HUMAN), Liam Hemsworth (THE HUNGER GAMES), and up-and-comers Margot Robbie (PAN AM, THE WOLF OF WALL STREET) and Jay Ryan (TOP OF THE LAKE, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST). His is perhaps the only character name cooler than Kane’s and I like the juxtaposition of new tech/”aficionado of old classic crimes” in the descriptor. Something about it just sings for me.
And of course there’s perennial faves Larroquette and Frewer who join Bob Newhart and Jane Curtin in a festival of legendary TV star goodness. Larroquette, who most recently appeared on FOX’s they-better-renew-it-or-else gloriousness ALMOST HUMAN, is the team’s Judson, “an expert in ancient lore who has been working out of the Library’s branch office for longer than anyone knows.” While Frewer will be taking a walk on the villainous side as the primary baddie. I’m looking forward to seeing which direction the go with him as very little is said in the press release (though the do use one descriptor that’s very telling but I won’t share here in case you want to be surprised).
All in all, I think it’s a very strong primary cast. Naturally I’d like it if it were a little more diverse but, like I said, I have an affection for all the actors and I appreciate the continued trend of having Asian male leads in non-stereotypical roles.
